Combined Missions

Peacekeeping and peacemaking missions, both today and in the future, are based on the cooperation of military forces from countries all over the world. The feasibility of multinational operations greatly depends on all parties being able to reliably and efficiently communicate with each other. Not just at the higher strategic command levels such as the divisional and brigade levels, but also at the operational level: between mobile command posts, vehicles and dismounted soldiers. The solution: interoperability based on portable waveforms.

Designed as an open platform, the R&S®SDTR offers unprecedented flexibility that allows users to configure the communications system to the mission at hand and not, as in the past, the other way round.

The R&S®SDTR allows both legacy waveforms and new high data rate waveforms to be ported to the radio system, ensuring interoperability with allied forces and blue light organizations.

The R&S®SDTR comes with a comprehensive suite of state-of-the-art waveforms. The R&S®HDR waveform family fully utilizes the platform’s capabilities by delivering high data rates and allows network centric operations down to platoon level.

Joint Operations

Today’s threats are multidimensional. Consequently, military operations require the capability of fast response throughout all branches of the armed forces. With forces deployed on land, in the air and at sea, coordination is more important than ever. These kinds of joint operations deliver a high level of flexibility, making it possible to appropriately respond to enemy forces’ threats. To meet these demanding requirements, reliable communications based on a common platform must be provided for all branches of the armed forces.

Our Contribution

Rohde & Schwarz has developed the R&S®SDxR family, the next generation of software defined radios. These radios are based on a joint, digital platform to ensure secure communications and interoperability between all forces. The common platform makes it easy to port waveforms to all radios of the R&S®SDxR family.

Rohde & Schwarz also provides the R&S®HDR waveform family for these radios. From the very beginning of development, all operational scenarios for the different branches of the armed forces were taken into account to make sure that the waveforms optimally serve their needs.

Reliable Command and Control

Today’s military operations generate a vast amount of information such as position data of own and enemy forces, geo data, still and video images, and even biometric and health data. This enormous amount of information has to be exchanged between all units involved to enable network centric operations. The objective of a network centric operational concept is to gain and maintain information superiority. Military leaders will be able to flexibly respond to unexpected and changing situations and act faster. This will ensure the success of today’s military operations.

Our Contribution

Future military communications networks will be fully IP based to enable the flexible transport of information. The R&S®SDTR next generation tactical radio can be seamlessly integrated into IP networks, ensuring that data packets are continuously and reliably forwarded.

Rohde & Schwarz has developed a family of waveforms to meet the requirements of simultaneous voice and data transmission. These waveforms can simultaneously transport voice and data at high speed and with different priorities. Their advanced architecture makes it possible to configure different radio subgroups within a network, which significantly reduces the number of radios that a military structure needs for communications. The result is improved efficiency and significant cost savings.

By using state-of-the-art mobile ad-hoc network protocols, the R&S®HDR waveforms make it possible to automatically restructure networks. Since the R&S®SDTR serves as an automatic relay, nodes can communicate with each other even though they are not connected via a line-of-sight radio link (multihop capability).

Protecting Communities of Interest

Multinational collaborations require special protection of classified information. On the one hand, it is necessary to exchange information among allies; on the other hand, there is information that must not be communicated outside the national domain.

Our Contribution

The security architecture of the R&S®SDTR tactical radio meets the highest demands regarding the strict separation of plain and encrypted data. This prevents plain data from being transmitted unintentionally via the radio channel.

The protection of information by encryption is referred to as communications security (COMSEC). The R&S®SDTR system uses especially powerful internal encryption methods based, for example, on advanced encryption standard (AES) algorithms.

Content protection is not the only crucial requirement. Communications should also be resistant to jamming. For this reason, the R&S®SDTR features various techniques for ensuring transmission security (TRANSEC). High-performance hardware that enables several thousand frequency hops per second, combined with additional measures built into the waveform, ensures the best possible protection against enemy detection, interception and jamming.

Time, money and personnel – this magic triangle of available resources determines a military mission’s freedom of action. Achieving a good balance between all parameters without compromising quality is essential, especially in complex military procurement projects.

Our Contribution

Rohde & Schwarz dealt intensively with these issues while developing the new R&S®SDTR software defined tactical radio and offers convincing solutions for real-world applications.

To ease the training burden for military personnel, Rohde & Schwarz has developed a radically new operating concept for the R&S®SDTR. The control unit’s unique, ergonomic operating concept allows users to quickly and intuitively familiarize themselves with the R&S®SDTR radio and the R&S®HDR waveforms.

The stringent Rohde & Schwarz quality principles were also applied in the development of the R&S®SDTR. The radio’s open architecture and high flexibility make the R&S®SDTR a safe investment. The R&S®SDTR was developed in line with the SCA standard, which means that porting waveforms – current or future – is significantly less costly than in the past.
