Growing businesses in a new world of software solutions, post Covid

In the first interview of 2021, it is appropriate that we introduce  Andreas Loges, the new Vice President of the Media Technologies business within Rohde & Schwarz’s Broadcast & Media Division. Here, we discuss with Andreas the challenge facing him and his team in supporting customers in one of the most difficult business environments the broadcast industry has known for generations.

Growing businesses has been a central consideration for Andreas throughout his 20-year career in the media industry and as trends shift rapidly in both broadcasting technology and operations Andreas believes Rohde & Schwarz is perfectly positioned to support customers in the post Covid world.

Migrating to software-defined products and systems

The current trend in broadcasting is the move to software-defined, modular systems that can be virtualized on prem or in the cloud. “We’re already there with several of our solutions – such as Pixel Power for master control playout and PRISMON for monitoring and multiviewing – and it should be no surprise that our studio production solutions are well on the way,” he explains. “This does not mean that we overlook our hardware heritage - we need to support customers as they make the migration to software-defined remote ways of working – not only in terms of product but also new business models.”

Over the last year, COVID has had a really significant impact on Rohde & Schwarz’s customers. Broadcasters are evaluating their purchase decisions much more closely based on the circumstances – live productions simply aren’t happening right now. But some areas are seeing significantly higher levels of interest – such as our software-defined IP multiviewer systems and the virtualizable, software-defined master control playout systems from Pixel Power – and this is related to the rise in remote working operations and new workflow requirements.

“We can support our customers with hybrid systems that can operate traditional SDI workflows as well as SMPTE ST 2110 IP-based systems,” Andreas explains. “And as customers are looking at how they can harness the advantages of software-defined solutions they are evaluating fundamental changes in business model from CAPEX to OPEX. The drive towards software-based, virtualizable, cloud-based systems make this change easier – we offer both

Support your customers and they will grow your business

Andreas joined DVS in 2001 as Chief Finance Officer and over the next decade helped grow the business to around €30 million. When Rohde & Schwarz acquired the company in 2010, Andreas became CEO and steered the business to become an integral part of Rohde & Schwarz within the core of the new Media Technologies business within the company.

The Media Technologies business that Andreas now leads is focussed on solutions for Studio Production, Post Production, Delivery, Storage, Monitoring and Multiviewing and includes a growing collaboration and integration with the latest R&S acquisition, Pixel Power  to result in a strong joint sales and service force.

From its inception, DVS’ focus was on the Post Production industry with the highly successful CLIPSTER mastering and versioning workstation that became a leading brand in the post industry worldwide. Now, within Rohde & Schwarz, the company’s Venice Media Server system has adapted many of its core capabilities, especially in data transcoding and flexibility, to benefit broadcasters in live studio production.

“Today, we serve a wide range of broadcast workflows from Data Ingest, Transcoding and QC for  live Studio Production through to integrated Playout Solutions with the Pixel Power software. Also, we have elegant monitoring and IP-multiviewer capabilities with the PRISMON family, both on-prem and cloud based and one of the industry’s most advanced media storage systems with SpycerNode,” explained Andreas Loges. “Individually, each product and system is competitive, but it is when we combine these into an integrated, harmonious workflow solution that’s you see Rohde & Schwarz technologies start to sing.”

“COVID has impacted every organization and this is true of Rohde& Schwarz – as with our customers, most staff are still working from home offices. But we’re a financially solid company and can maintain a long-term vision for us and our customers,” Andreas Loges explained. “Throughout the pandemic, we have maintained our investment in research & development with a keen focus on developing software-defined virtualizable workflow solutions. Alongside this, we have further developed our OPEX-based business models, some of which we have been offering for more than five years, to satisfy the customer demand to help their businesses become more flexible and resilient in the new post-Covid world.

“Hopefully 2021 will be a year of recovery in the global broadcast industry,” Andreas concludes. “Both in terms of new product introductions, and also the ways that we bring these innovations to market we have planned a number of really significant announcements this year. Please stay safe, but also watch this space – we live in tremendously exciting times.”
